Septic Repair & System Maintenance
Septic system maintenance is crucial for ensuring the system’s long-term functionality and preventing costly repairs or environmental hazards.
Maintenance must be carried out by an Authorized person or ROWP (Registered Onsite Wastewater Practitioner) with the Maintenance Provider (MP) designation on their stamp.
Routine maintenance primarily involves regular pumping of the septic tank to remove sludge and scum that accumulate over time. The frequency of pumping depends on the system size, household size, and daily water usage, but generally, tanks should be inspected and pumped every three to five years. Besides pumping, homeowners need to monitor household water usage to prevent overloading the system and causing premature backup or failure. Careful management of what goes into the septic system, such as avoiding disposing non-biodegradable materials, fats, oils, and harsh chemicals, greatly reduces the risk of clogs and inefficiencies.
Effluent Filter
One of the simplest aspects of maintenance is regular cleaning of the effluent filter, located in the outlet tee of the septic tank. Generally, cleaning the filter once a year is sufficient for most households. Regular maintenance also includes taking readings of the panel and making any changes with regards to time on and off the pump doses the field.
Moreover, residents should be mindful of their water drainage systems, ensuring that rainwater and surface runoff are directed away from the septic components to prevent saturation of the dispersal field.
By referring to your Operation and Maintenance Manual, homeowners ensure their septic systems operate efficiently, safeguard public health, and protect local water resources from pollution. Chris Bayley of Cowichan Wastewater Plus has the MP (Maintenance Provider) designation on his stamp.
